England 2-3 West Germany

Bobby Charlton was replaced by Colin Bell in the 70th minute, shortly after Franz Beckenbauer had scored to reduce England's lead to 2–1. Martin Peters was replaced by Norman Hunter eleven minutes later, and within a minute Uwe Seeler equalised. The rest of the match is history ...

Charlton's substitution was significant (as implied in the question by the use of the word 'famously', underlined) because he was England's most–capped player at the time, and its record goal scorer, and this was the last of his 106 caps. He was 32 years old; on the flight home from Mexico, he asked Sir Alf Ramsey not to consider him again. His brother Jack, two years his senior but with 71 fewer caps, did the same.

Peters continued to play for four more years; his international career ended after England failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup finals tournament. He was 31 years old at the time, and had won 67 caps.

If I'd been setting this question, I'd have asked "Who was substituted in the 1970 World Cup quarter final against West Germany, and never played for England again?" I just think Martin Peters might find this a bit less dismissive.
